Mount of piety
In the Middle Ages, loans were difficult to obtain. In the city of Kortrijk, your only option would be the ‘Lombards’, merchants and bankers from the north of Italy who had settled in the city, and often charged punitive interests. To offer a fairer alternative, the government founded a mount of piety – a pawn bank that provided loans at reasonable rates. The Flemish architect Wenceslas Cobergher designed the building in Gothic style. The mount of piety opened its doors in 1630 and continued lending money for almost 300 years – it closed in 1922.

Today, this historic building is the heart of the Cobergher five-star superior luxury boutique hotel and congress venue. It has been carefully restored, preserving original features such as the imposing grand staircase and the 19th-century Orangerie. The result is an interior that feels grand yet welcoming - from the Cobergher room, which seats 100 guests, to the more intimate salons and the orangerie, which can be used for breakout meetings. All rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art meeting technology, including one of the largest indoor LED screens in the Low Countries.
A historic building with cutting-edge technology is in itself a rarity, but the biggest asset of the Cobergher is its personal service. From the very first e-mail to the moment your last guest leaves the building, the staff will be there to support and guide you. The Cobergher has no standard formula – all its congresses, meetings, and events are tailormade.

The Cobergher is located in the heart of Kortrijk, a charming Flemish city on the banks of the River Leie. Its rich heritage includes a belfry and beguinage listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kortrijk is a delightful place to lose yourself in picturesque alleyways, enjoy a local beer in a café, or visit one of its museums or a live performance. The city is also a great starting point for excursions such as a craft brewery visit or a boat trip on the Leie – our team will gladly help you plan them.
