From Focus on Impact to Return on Investment, and vice versa

Why governments and businesses are fans of your impact

Create impact with your conference - Good for business
Creating impact with your conference requires extra effort. You need to free up people, time, and resources to record, develop, and then apply your positive effect on society. Is it worth the fuss? Doesn't that additional investment in hours and manpower outweigh the return on your conference, especially when that conference is an important source of income for your association or PCO?

A stronger story for a wider audience

Yes, say more and more experts. A strategy focused on impact increases the target audience of your conference. After all, an impactful conference is more than just an academic event and therefore appeals to a wider audience than just scientists. By also focusing on social impact, the message of your conference becomes more powerful, and you can more easily obtain funding from government and entrepreneurs. In other words, your story sounds more convincing, and you broaden the support base for partnerships and financial support.

This was proven not so long ago in Flanders. Before submitting a bid - for a conference that is still in the pipeline and therefore cannot be named at this time - Flanders Convention Bureau facilitated an extensive gaps & needs study. Stakeholders from academia, government, the business world, and even the public were involved.

The resulting dossier clearly demonstrated the added value that Flanders would reap by focusing on the impact of the conference. For example, urban services within the domain could receive extra support. The domain would also be prominently in the spotlight among the public. Moreover, this audience would gain a very clear picture of the importance of this domain for society. Precisely because the social importance was so convincingly demonstrated, the government came forward with financial support.

A win-win situation with the business community

The business community can also be an interesting partner. This is illustrated by the award-winning “Love Your Liver” campaign by EASL-The Home of Hepatology. At each conference, the association invites residents of the host city to undergo liver screening. At the same time, experts visit schools to educate children about liver health.

Both initiatives are made possible by the support of Echosens, a company specializing in liver screening. The collaboration benefits both parties: EASL raises awareness about liver disease and promotes prevention, while Echosens reaps the financial rewards of more screenings. “Love Your Liver” is a wonderful example of a win-win situation and deservedly won the ESAE Impact Award in 2023.

Speaking of awards, winning them is also a way to finance impact. In 2024, for example, the EACD (European Association for Childhood Disabilities) won the Incredible Impacts Award, presented by ICCA and BestCities Global Alliance. This earned the association $20,000 to extend the impact of the conference to the locations of their next conferences. This means that activities will also be organized in Heidelberg and Galway to improve the quality of life of children with disabilities.
